Carmex Lip Balm // Hidratante Labial da Carmex

I've been earing about Carmex lip balm since I became interested in makeup. Every foreigner blogger would rave about it and I would crave the opportunity to try it myself. I wasn't used to buying stuff online at the time so the idea of buying a product that wasn't for sale in Portugal seemed like a huge thing. I had huge hopes on Carmex's abilities as a moisturizing product for my dry lips. When I finally found out it was for sale at a pharmacy near my home I immediately ran out to buy it. It cost less than 5€ and I remember thinking that was a great price...

Carmex was invented in 1936, so it has been around for quite a while. It's a cold sore and chapped lip salve so it not for everyday use. Not knowing this, I began using it everyday from the moment I bought it. That lead to a bad experience but I'll get to there shortly. There is this huge myth that says that this balm is addictive. The rumor is so widespread that the brand mentions it on their website. One rumor goes as far as saying that they put fiber glass in the product, so this sound more like something made up to ruin the sales.

Carmex lip balm comes in a jar, stick and tube form. I am reviewing the original (non-flavored) tube version. My tube, specially at the beginning, smelt like plastic, which bothered me a bit. During the Winter the product would get a bit harder (due to the low temperatures) making it harder to dispense it - but once it was out it would easily melt on my lips. The lip balm itself is a clear gel. It spreads easily on the lips, leaving them shinny. It's not sticky, smells like menthol and if you apply a lot and breath through your mouth it feels like you just brushed your teeth, ahah. When my lips were severely chapped, so bad that they were bleeding, I would feel a little burning feel, which I think it's normal considering you have a wound.

Like I said above, Carmex is good for when your lips are severely chapped, not for a everyday use. When I use it regularly I find that it ends up doing more harm than good. My lips end up feeling dry and they chapped more easily. To keep them looking good I have to reapply this all the time and why would I want a lip balm that needs to be applied ten times a day? I want something that I have to apply once or twice a day to keep my lips moisturized, not something that I have to use ten times to make them look decent.

Carmex is good for emergencies, when your lips are in pretty bad condition but once they heal you should switch back to your normal lip balm - that's how I wear it and it works fine this way. Considering this is not for everyday use, it will surely last you a long time.
Have you tried it? What's your favorite lip balm?
